The story of Præstekilde ...
For long times past was a source of Stege Nor's eastern shore. It was found by a dean down by the reeds between the cemetery and the cove.
The village here was named after this source, namely: "Kildeby" - today Keldby. The source was said to have had a curative effect, why pilgrims flocked to it. Unfortunately, the source dried up long ago, but history has given its name to Hotel Præstekilde = priest's source. Furthermore, it stated that Keldby Church was built between 1225-1245 by the Sheriff Jacob Soneson, who lived at Stege Castle. It was he who built all the red church on Moen: Stege, Keldby, Borre and Magleby.
The hotel's history, unleashed in 1970's, when Ellen Vita and Poul Hemmingsen bought and built a riding center and established coffee house in the accompanying villa.
In the mid-1970s took Anne and Arne Nordahl instead, then riding hall was demolished. They built a restaurant that was later expanded to include hotel rooms. The hotel has since been continuously expanded. The last expansion was in the summer of 1988, where they built two new wings of rooms, an indoor swimming pool and a larger kitchen.
Today Præstekilde Hotel is a modern 4 star hotel, with a broad clientele. There are approx. 25 full time employees to operate Huster guests. The hotel is owned by Soren Westergaard. who for 10 years has operated the restaurant in the Nikolai Church in Copenhagen. The daily operation of the hotel are also undertaken by director Soren Westergaard.
